Phase 6

Operation & Maintenance

Objective

Operating and maintaining the SIF to ensure its continuing integrity is a critical phase of the Functional Safety Lifecycle.

Application

SIF operating and maintenance procedures are developed to ensure that the required SIL of each SIF on a plant is maintained until it is no longer required and is to be decommissioned.

The training of operations and maintenance personnel in the function and operation of the SIS is a mandatory requirement of IEC 61511 as is the maintenance of the target SIL of each SIF.

A key activity of operations and maintenance is the development of inspection and proof testing procedures, ongoing training and scheduled functional safety audits and assessments to ensure continuing improvement.
