Functional Safety Management

Introduction

These are the systems used by an organisation to manage its activities to ensure that their functional safety objectives are accomplished.

The objective of having a compliant functional safety management system is to ensure that all aspects from process hazard and risk assessments to decommissioning of the SIS are managed.  This is to ensure continuity and suitable and sufficient process are applied through out the lifecycle to engineer, install, operate and maintain the system so it is functionally safe and minimise potential systematic errors resulting in undesired events.

Application

Existing systems are first systematically reviewed through Functional Safety Gap Analysis.  Once this is complete and the gaps are identified and prioritised the overall Functional Safety Management System (FSMS) can be developed.

The general Management system forms part of the Process Safety and Quality Management System.  The FSMS outlines the organisations objectives and identifies the procedures and processes, which have been identified to meet the organisations objectives and compliance to appropriate standards.  The FSMS also identifies competency requirements for the different roles for persons who shall interact with the SIS and how the organisation plans to manage its responsibilities.
